Weekend Courses for Plastic Surgery Techniques

Posted on February 24, 2009 9:42AM in Dr. LeRoy's Blog

Many doctors take a weekend course to learn advanced techniques for plastic and cosmetic surgery. As a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon, I too have taken these courses because our boards require us to stay up-to-date. However, taking a weekend course in liposuction or facial rejuvenation, regardless of what you are board certified in, does not make you capable of performing these procedures or any other new cosmetic surgery technique that may go along with them.

I perform plastic surgery of the face, breasts and body; but when I first began my plastic surgery career back in the early 90’s, I wanted to learn more advanced techniques in plastic surgery. In doing so I sought out the best hospital and plastic surgeons who offered their expertise in plastic surgery advancements. And for an additional year, after I earned my boards in both plastic and general surgery, I performed and completed a one year fellowship with internationally renowned surgeons at Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital. The Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital is world famous for advanced techniques in cosmetic plastic surgery.

Seeking out the best and taking the time to perfect my plastic surgery techniques early on has allowed me to bring my patients safe and extraordinary results for 17 years. During these 17 years, I have revised a lot of faces, breasts and bodies from physicians who chose to take a weekend course instead of completing the years of training necessary to perform these procedures accurately. As a patient you must do your homework on the surgeon you choose to perform your surgery to ensure the safe and extraordinary results you deserve.

Just what is the Band Aid Facelift?

Posted on February 24, 2009 9:31AM in Dr. LeRoy's Blog

As we age, our skin becomes thinner, our muscle’s begin to drop, and the fat in our face diminishes; yes, this is a disadvantage to getting older, but it doesn’t have to be. Today, people are taking better care of themselves and living longer; they want to look as young as they feel. The Band Aid Facelift helps achieve this by producing natural looking results. It is a maintenance facial procedure with results lasting anywhere from 5-10 years (based on the individual’s lifestyle). You may find yourself asking, “What makes the Band Aid Facelift better from the competitions similarly marketed ‘Mini’ or ‘Weekend’ Facelift procedures?”

All of these later developed Mini Facelift procedures such as the Lifestyle Lift and the Thread Lift should not be confused with the Band Aid Facelift.  While they all focus on certain areas of the face, which can really make a difference to anti-aging efforts such as a sagging jaw line and creases and folds around the cheeks and nose, there are many differences.  I developed and began performing the Band Aid Facelift over 17 years ago.  These years have given me the ability to add my own intricate details in perfecting this procedure, producing a more natural looking result. Other benefits of the Band Aid Facelift include lower costs (currently under $5k), lower risks involved since only a local numbing is required, shorter surgery and recovery times (a little over an hour and less than one week, respectively).

Although a traditional facelift may be more appropriate for some patients, many don’t want the risk of being put under general anesthesia and the Band Aid Facelift simply fits the life strategy of some better.  It is more “patient-friendly”, meaning people in their 40’s as well as people in their 80’s who want to take the clock back 10 years have the Band Aid Facelift as an alternative instead of the cookie-cutter, traditional approach.  Then in 10 years or so they can come back and do another Band Aid Facelift, never having to be concerned with undergoing a major procedure. With all this information, now you should know the Band Aid Facelift is a patient-friendly procedure with little downtime and great results!

Fighting Wrinkles Series: Part 1

Posted on February 24, 2009 9:28AM in Dr. LeRoy's Blog

As we age, we have areas of the face and body where the skin becomes thinner and begins to lose its elasticity producing a wrinkled appearance. Fillers such as Restylane®, Juvederm™ or Radiesse® can be injected into certain areas of the face and body where volume has been lost.

As recently seen on the CBS television talk show, “The Doctors,” a new age-defying procedure is being performed: a procedure that diminishes wrinkles from the chest area between the breasts. This is a procedure I perform on a regular basis, but after this show aired, we began receiving quite a few phone calls about this wrinkle remover.

This procedure is very much like injecting a filler product into areas of the face.  I inject an effective amount of filler (i.e.-Restylane®, Juvederm™ or Radiesse®) into the chest area between the breasts to bring back a more youthful appearance.  The treatment takes about 15 minutes and results typically last about six months.

Cosmetic Surgery versus Maintenance Procedures

Posted on February 24, 2009 9:00AM in Dr. LeRoy's Blog

Psychologists say some people just don’t want the risk of undergoing anesthesia, particularly with a cosmetic procedure.  Although extremely rare, many patients feel that if something were to go wrong they could not live with themselves.

For this reason, as well as others of an economic nature, there are quite a few procedures that can be performed in the office with only a local numbing.  These maintenance procedures can be performed on several areas of the face and body.

Most people are familiar with a few of the most common maintenance procedures such as Botox®, Restylane®, Juvederm™ and Perlane, etc.  These are facial filler products used to remove wrinkles or enhance certain areas of the face such as the lips.  Procedures which can be performed in the office that you may not be familiar with are liposuction (to remove smaller volumes of fat on the “love handles,” facial jowling or a “double chin”), mini-blepharoplasty (eye lift), as well as, mini-facelift (such as the Band Aid Facelift).

Although these maintenance procedures are not appropriate for everyone, they are yet another option for people seeking cost effective ways to improve their appearance.  Call our office today to schedule your consultation and we’ll discuss your options.
