Although patients choose to have plastic surgery procedures to enhance their appearances, they are not necessarily looking for a drastic physical change. There are some patients who only need a small enhancement to reach their surgical goals. If these desired adjustments are minimal enough to only require a minimally invasive procedure, general anesthesia may not be necessary. For that reason, I refined my original Band Aid Facelift in 1997, which is my version of a “mini” facelift, to provide for patients whose aged appearance doesn’t yet call for the traditional facelift. Since then I’ve continued to refine traditional cosmetic procedures, and I now offer Band Aid Blepharoplasty, Band Aid Brow Lift, Band Aid Liposuction, and Band Aid Tummy Tuck as well. Although I would love to offer Band Aid versions of each traditional plastic surgery procedure, a Band Aid procedure is not always feasible.
Take breast procedures for example. Though there are some surgeons who perform “mini” breast enhancements with only gentle numbing (often called “awake breast augmentation”), it is important to understand that breast enhancement surgery is an elaborate procedure. Keeping patient comfort as top priority, breast procedures, including breast reduction and breast lift are best performed under general anesthesia. Another intricate procedure that is not a good fit for a Band Aid technique is nose surgery (rhinoplasty). It is also important to understand that just because certain procedures lend themselves to a Band Aid technique, doesn’t mean that the Band Aid version of the particular procedure is suitable for every patient.

I continually remind patients to only seek plastic surgery procedures from board certified plastic surgeons who have experience performing the specific procedures they’re pursuing. According to a statement released last week by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), experience is also a vital part of selecting an appropriate plastic surgery technique.
The ASAPS statement urges consumers to proceed with caution if they’re contemplating procedures like stem cell facial rejuvenation or stem cell breast augmentation saying, “Although stem cell technology in the area of plastic surgery is very promising, scientific evidence is still insufficient.”
The stem cell procedures in question harvest a patient’s own blood and/or fat for reinjection into an area of the body in need of rejuvenation.

Last week, millions watched Kerry Campbell inject her eight year old daughter’s face with Botox® to get rid of the “wrinkles” the young girl self-reported in preparation for several children’s beauty pageants. The San Francisco mom, a part time esthetician (who never claimed or denied whether she was licensed or not) defended her actions stating, “I’ve been doing Botox® for a long time, and I get it from a trusted source behind a doctor.”
Regardless of the mom’s “source”, I felt conflicted about even acknowledging the story as there are multiple levels of concern here. I feel sorry for Ms. Campbell and her little girl because there will certainly be long-term challenges as a result of Kerry Campbell’s wrong decision. However, as a father and someone who has stood by the Hippocratic Oath that I took nearly twenty years ago promising to do no harm, I believe it is imperative to use this story as a testament to the importance of plastic surgery patient education.
It’s very important for facial rejuvenation patients to understand who is and is not legally permitted to administer Botox®. In the state of Georgia, only board certified doctors of medicine, physician assistants, registered nurses, or nurse practitioners under the direction of a physician are permitted to treat patients with the product. The reasons for these limitations are in the patients’ best interest. Botox® is composed of a purified form of the neurotoxin botulinum. When injected by a qualified professional, the treatment is effective in reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles between and around the eyes by relaxing the wrinkle-causing muscles for four to six months.
Given the effect Botox® has on muscles into which it’s injected, it can also produce undesirable side effects like drooping eyelids and even temporary facial paralysis if done incorrectly. This story is especially concerning because the “patient” is so young, and her body is not finished growing. There are rare cases in which Botox® may be appropriate to pediatric patients (i.e.- the treatment of chronic muscle spasms symptomatic of certain neuromuscular disorders), but this type of treatment should only be performed by a neurologist or a similarly qualified board certified specialist.
Because Botox® is only legally available for purchase by M.D.’s, consumers should be very wary of non-doctor affiliated Botox® providers. I encourage all Atlanta facial rejuvenation patients to ask questions of their providers before any cosmetic skin treatment or facial plastic surgery. If their prospective provider can’t produce the appropriate documentation or information to prove their legitimacy, seek treatment elsewhere.

Over the last nineteen years, a lot has changed in the cosmetic and plastic surgery fields. Everyone’s heard of the popular cosmetic procedure that eliminates excess fat through suctioning cannulas called liposuction, right? Then, you’ve probably also heard that the procedure does require a bit of recovery time. However, if you have small, stubborn fat pockets to get rid of (i.e.- fat pockets above the knee, hips, abdomen, etc.), you may be a candidate for less invasive Band Aid Liposuction.
Like the rest of my Band Aid procedures, Band Aid Liposuction is reserved for patients whose areas of concern do not justify having the full surgery. Also like the rest, Band Aid Liposuction can be performed in-office with only gentle numbing: making recovery time much shorter. Be aware, however, that while most small areas of stubborn fat can be treated with only gentle numbing, larger areas with a lot of nerve endings will require general anesthesia.
Band Aid Liposuction is one of five of my original Band Aid procedures, including: Band Aid Facelift, Band Aid Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery), Band Aid Brow Lift and Band Aid Tummy Tuck. Each of these procedures is minimally invasive, so if you’ve been considering plastic surgery, but aren’t sure you require a full procedure, or are looking for a procedure with maximum benefits and minimal downtime, schedule a consultation today.
While a specific surgical plan can only be made after a cosmetic consultation, it’s also helpful to know that many of these minimally invasive procedures can be combined. Similar to Mommy Makeover Surgery in which I often simultaneously perform a breast surgery with liposuction and/or a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty), some Band Aid Blepharoplasty patients may choose to combine it with a Band Aid Brow Lift for total eye rejuvenation. Band Aid Liposuction patients who are concerned with abdominal fat often have excess abdominal tissue contributing to their esthetic concerns. If these patients only have small amounts of sagging abdominal skin, they may benefit from combining their procedure with a Band Aid Tummy Tuck.

Judging a person’s age is not always easy, but if they have drooping eyelids, it’s much easier. Luckily my blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) patients don’t have to worry about their eyes giving away their true age. A blepharoplasty procedure improves the appearance of aging eyes.
The eyes can show signs of aging a couple of different ways. At times, the upper eyelids begin to sag and produce a hooded appearance remedied with an upper blepharoplasty. Fat pockets on the lower eyelid that cause the eyes to look puffy can be eliminated along with wrinkles using a lower blepharoplasty. However, some patients benefit most from combining both upper and lower blepharoplasty.
Sometimes, this aged eye appearance isn’t caused by excess fat and sagging skin of the eyelid at all, but by wrinkling and excess skin of the forehead. This type of concern can be eliminated with brow lift surgery. During a brow lift, I lift and/or remove excess skin on the brow that contributes to forehead wrinkles and drooping eyebrows.
Some patients are concerned with the appearance of their eyes, but their condition isn’t severe enough to merit the full eyelid procedure. For these patients, I also offer Band Aid Blepharoplasty and Band Aid Brow Lift, which are minimally invasive versions of my traditional blepharoplasty and brow lift. Like the rest of my Band Aid procedures (Band Aid Tummy Tuck, Band Aid Facelift and Band Aid Liposuction), I perform Band Aid Blepharoplasty and Band Aid Brow Lift under gentle numbing (local anesthesia) right in my office.
Without proper training, it’s difficult for patients to know which facial cosmetic surgery will best suit their needs. I often see patients who think they need a blepharoplasty, but actually need a brow lift. Likewise, I see patients who are in a consultation for a traditional facelift, but their signs of aging really only call for a Band Aid Facelift. Therefore, if you’re concerned with the look of your eyes (or any other body part), but aren’t positive which one of these procedures will suit your needs; it’s best to schedule a consultation.
