Breast Enlargement in Atlanta, Georgia – Frequently Asked Questions

Most women are overwhelmed by questions when researching breast enlargement. Atlanta, Georgia-based cosmetic surgeon Dr. John LeRoy is committed to patient education and is always willing to discuss your questions and concerns with you during an in-person consultation. In the meantime, we have provided answers to some of the most common questions patients have about breast implants surgery.

What kind of implants does Dr. John LeRoy use?

Dr. John LeRoy uses saline implants, which are silicone shells filled with a sterile saline, or saltwater, solution. Saline implants are very durable and provide a soft, natural look. They are available in two shapes, round and anatomical (teardrop), and can be either a smooth or textured. What are some of the risks associated with breast enlargement?

Although we take every precaution possible during surgery at our Atlanta, Georgia facility, breast enlargement does carry some risk. As with any surgery, there is the risk of complications such as infection, excessive bleeding, or severe bruising and scarring. Post-surgery, there is the risk that the implant shell may wrinkle or fold, causing a bump or ridge in the implant that may be visible and affect the breast’s texture. There is also the risk that the implant shell may tear and rupture, causing the breast implant to leak. Fortunately, saline ruptures are easily and quickly detectable, and the saline poses no threat to the body.

Another post-surgical risk is the development of capsular contracture, which occurs when the scar tissue that naturally forms around the implant begins to contract and harden. In severe cases, capsular contracture can cause one or both breasts to become hard, painful, and unnatural-looking.

Breast enlargement complications are rare, and most patients find that their operations are relatively quick and comfortable. Dr. John LeRoy will thoroughly evaluate your medical history to ensure that you are not at any special risk.

Who is a good candidate for breast enlargement?

Generally, good breast enlargement candidates are healthy, well informed adults who do not have unrealistic expectations. Breast enlargement candidates should be sure to research the procedure carefully and make an extra effort to find a surgeon with whom they are comfortable.

Women who have unrealistic expectations about breast enlargement or who feel pressured into the procedure by friends, loved ones, or societal expectations should not undergo surgery. Teenagers are also not good candidates for breast enlargement, as their breasts will generally continue to develop into their early twenties. Generally, young women should wait until their breasts are fully developed to determine whether or not they are in need of augmentation.

The first 24 to 48 hours following breast enlargement at our Atlanta, Georgia facility will be the most uncomfortable, and most patients experience pain, fatigue, and breast soreness. Will I be able to breast feed after enlargement surgery?

Breast enlargement surgery should not interfere with your ability to breastfeed. However, some women find that their nipples are more sensitive than normal after breast augmentation surgery, and the pain associated with breastfeeding may be more intense than normal. There is no way to predict how breast implants will affect your experience with breastfeeding until you start; however, most women find that implants do not significantly inhibit the ability to nurse.
