Think beyond the facelift. Just like many plastic surgery procedures, rhinoplasty (nose surgery) has the ability to aid in creating a more proportionate aesthetic, in turn producing a more youthful appearance. With over twenty-two years of experience as a double board-certified plastic surgeon, I perform rhinoplasty to reduce a large or disproportionate bridge and/or refine the tip of the nose or nostrils.
The nose is a key player in determining facial balance and feature-blending, often more than my patients realize. If the nose is disproportionate, it can distract from your beautiful features rather than integrate them symmetrically and naturally. There are a few factors that are often addressed when your rhinoplasty goal is to look younger, including a slight upward point, a straight and smooth bridge (though not flat—you should still have a prominent profile from the side in order to look natural), and a proportional width that covers just the right amount of your face.
There are two types of rhinoplasty for facial rejuvenation I typically perform: open and closed. In open rhinoplasty, I’ll make an incision across the thin strip of tissue separating the nostrils called the columella. This technique allows for greater access to the cartilage and bone of the nose, making for a very precise surgery. Scarring for open rhinoplasty is usually limited to an imperceptible line on the underside of the nose. On the other hand, closed rhinoplasty eliminates the risk of visible scarring because incisions are made inside of the nostrils. In open rhinoplasty, bone and cartilage is taken away and/or reshaped to attain your ideal nasal contour. When required, the method of using nasal implants can be used to give the nose a better shape and heightened support, further adding to the anti-aging effects of rhinoplasty.
The goal of many of my facial rejuvenation patients typically does not focus on one particular feature. Rather, patients want to look in the mirror and see themselves, but ten years younger. Combining various minimally-invasive Band Aid Plastic Surgery treatments to address cosmetic concerns can achieve more subtle, yet effective results. For example, rhinoplasty can be combined with liposuction of the double chin or a browlift to refresh and renew a tired appearance.
