For the most part, facial plastic surgery procedures can be divided into two categories: those that focus on aging (like a face lift) and those that focus on facial structure and symmetrical balance (like rhinoplasty and ear surgery). However, facial structure actually changes as your muscle, fat, and even bone shifts or diminishes with age. This means that even though it may be subtle, aging does have an impact on your nose surgery results, and today we’re taking a closer look.
How Aging Affects Nose Surgery Results
Rhinoplasty is generally said to provide permanent results because, for the most part, your nose will retain its new shape. For instance, if your nose surgery smooths out a prominent bump, your bump won’t grow back. However, aging does cause some subtle changes in the nose, so your nose won’t necessarily look the same at 70 years of age as it did after your rhinoplasty at 20 years of age. Connective tissue weakens with age, often causing the tip of the nose to droop slightly, and some noses actually look larger with age as the patient naturally loses volume in other parts of the face. Keep in mind, though, that these changes should not discourage you from having nose surgery, because your nose will change with age whether you have surgery or not.
Rhinoplasty for Facial Rejuvenation
It’s true that your post-rhinoplasty nose may change shape with age, but the good news is that nose surgery may actually help you look younger. A 2012 study originally published in Archives of Facial Plastic Surgery actually found that patients who received rhinoplasty were perceived to be about 1.5 years younger. Certainly 1.5 years isn’t enough of a change to justify an extensive surgery, but it’s enough to be an added perk for adults who have other cosmetic concerns with their noses. Still, if your primary goal is to look younger, you’ll probably be more successful with a targeted facial rejuvenation procedure like a facelift, eyelid surgery, or my customized Band Aid Mini Facelift.
