More than 37 million people in the United States experience migraine headaches, with 2-3 million of them suffering from them chronically. With the throbbing pain, light and sound sensitivity, and nausea they often cause, it’s no surprise that sufferers often have to miss work, family functions, social events, and productivity as a consequence. New studies published in the journal, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery indicate that cosmetic eyelid surgery can actually relieve migraine symptoms.
The team of plastic and reconstructive surgeons that conducted the study included professionals from LSU Health Sciences Center New Orleans School of Medicine, who collectively reported the benefit of a specific eyelid surgery technique for migraine sufferers. In fact, over 90% of patients who had the surgery experienced relief after the nerves that trigger migraines were decompressed.
While endoscopic approaches exist to address migraines, many people often experience problems due to lack of experience with endoscopy from many surgeons. In the group of patients within the study, upper eyelid incisions caused a proportionately successful release due to the deactivation of the nerves associated with migraine headaches. Though larger studies are certainly needed, this could be a breakthrough for migraine suffers to address discomfort as well as benefit from cosmetic eyelid surgery.
Eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty or Band Aid blepharoplasty for less drastic cases, is a procedure that renews an alert, youthful appearance of your most rested state. By removing excess skin and fat from the upper and/or lower eyelids, the eye area can be completely revitalized. If you experience bags under the eyes, sagging upper eyelids, a puffy appearance, or obstructed vision due to any of these issues you are likely a candidate for either traditional blepharoplasty or my focused Band Aid version of the rejuvenating procedure. Lifting the eyelids is not limited to either gender or being performed alone—I frequently combine brow lifts or forehead lifts. I perform eyelid surgery on both men and women who are interested in facial anti-aging or relieving eye sagging.
