Forty-nine year old identical twins Miki and Donna Keller appeared on Good Morning America last week to reveal the results of their self described, “Twin Facelift Challenge.” The Los Angeles natives were tired of seeing sagging skin on their faces and underneath their chins, so they elected to do something about it in their own individual ways.
In an interview with ABC correspondent Cecilia Vega the two explained their desire to have their outward appearances match their spunky personalities, “I care about how I look. I want to be attractive,” Donna explained. She went on to say, “I want to feel younger. I want to match my attitude, so to speak.”
Miki underwent a mini-facelift under local anesthesia as well as a laser skin resurfacing treatment, Botox® injections, and an eyelid lift (blepharoplasty) by a Beverly Hills plastic surgeon. Conversely, Donna elected to receive a traditional facelift along with laser skin resurfacing, Botox® injections, eyelid lift, and injected fat cells (fat transfer) for facial rejuvenation by another area plastic surgeon. Unlike Miki who was able to return home the same day of her procedures, Donna remained in the hospital overnight for observation.
Eight weeks after their surgeries the sisters were both satisfied with their results. Miki shared, “We get compliments from our friends. They say we haven’t changed the way we look, we just look better.” While Donna did describe her full facelift recovery as initially difficult, she too was pleased with her facial rejuvenation results.
While this California surgeon’s technique was not the Band Aid Facelift that Dr. LeRoy developed, it was performed with local anesthesia and allowed the patient to return to their regular activities more quickly than a traditional, full facelift. Dr. LeRoy comments on the story’s message by reminding patients about the personal process of selecting the appropriate facial plastic surgery procedures to fit their needs.
He states, “Miki and Donna, even though they share the same genes, clearly had different cosmetic concerns and goals. It’s really not a matter of which facelift procedure is better than the other, but which procedure fits the patient’s lifestyle and what facelift technique will produce the cosmetic results they’re after.”
Dr. LeRoy also notes the importance of patients researching their potential surgeon even for mini-procedures like the facelift Miki underwent, “If patients do their research and a good bit of soul searching initially so that they are armed with the right questions during their consultations, successful plastic surgery results become much more probable. “
