EAR SURGERY (OTOPLASTY)

Performed by John L. LeRoy, M.D., FACS in Atlanta, Georgia.

Ear surgery, or otoplasty, is an effective way to reduce the prominence of large or forward-facing ears by setting them closer to the head. Also known as “ear pinning,” otoplasty can greatly enhance a person’s appearance by drawing attention away from large or obtrusive ears and creating facial symmetry. Most otoplasty patients are children between the ages of four and fourteen who can benefit from the confidence that facial plastic surgery allows. Adults, too, who suffer from larger or protruding ears can benefit from ear surgery.

The Otoplasty Procedure

Achieving a patient’s desired otoplasty results often involves re-shaping the ear’s cartilage (the strong yet flexible material that makes up much of the ear’s external structure). Double board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. John LeRoy typically uses an incision on the back of the ear to remove and re-shape the cartilage as needed. Internal sutures are used to support and secure the ear’s new shape before the incision is closed for healing. The procedure may differ between children and adults, as children’s cartilage is flexible while adults’ cartilage has hardened with age.

Every patient’s recovery experience is unique, but otoplasty patients can generally expect to return to most of their normal day-to-day activities about one week after surgery. Following post-procedure instructions closely is important in ensuring the best possible outcome. In particular, patients should avoid applying pressure to the affected ear(s) and removing the dressings earlier than instructed, as this can affect how the ear adjusts to its new shape.

As with other facial cosmetic procedures like the Band Aid Facelift, Dr. LeRoy uses precise techniques to minimize scarring and to conceal the surgical scar within the natural creases of the ear. Patients should note that otoplasty does not generally have a noticeable effect on hearing ability.

Our Otoplasty Patient’s Experience

After years of feeling self-conscious about protruding ears, this patient chose otoplasty to improve the balance of his facial features and give him a renewed confidence in his appearance.
