RHINOPLASTY (NOSE SURGERY)
Performed by John L. LeRoy, M.D., FACS in Atlanta, Georgia
Patients who are dissatisfied with the shapes of their noses or who experience breathing difficulties due to injuries or birth defects can benefit immensely from rhinoplasty, or nose surgery. One of the most commonly performed plastic surgery procedures at our office in Atlanta, Georgia, rhinoplasty can be used to reshape the nose tip, bridge, or nostrils or remove a prominent hump. Generally, Dr. John LeRoy works with each patient to achieve a more symmetrical shape but not necessarily a “new” nose; patients usually wish to maintain their distinctive features while adding overall balance to their faces.
At our office in Atlanta, rhinoplasty surgery is performed as an outpatient procedure under local anesthesia (or in some cases, general anesthesia). Dr. John LeRoy performs two types of rhinoplasty, open and closed, distinguished by the way in which he accesses the nose’s interior.
In an open rhinoplasty, Dr. LeRoy will make an incision across the columella, which is the thin strip of tissue separating the nostrils. This technique allows for greater access to the cartilage and bone of the nose, making it possible for the surgeon to perform the most precise surgery possible. Although most surgeons prefer this method, it is also more likely to cause visible scarring. However, this scarring is usually limited to a very small, unnoticeable line on the underside of the nose.
Also performed at our office in Atlanta, Georgia, closed rhinoplasty can reshape the nose without the risk of visible scarring. In closed rhinoplasty, Dr. LeRoy makes incisions inside the nostrils so that no scars will be apparent after healing. As in open rhinoplasty, bone and cartilage is removed and/or reshaped to achieve an ideal nasal contour; occasionally, a nasal implant can also be used to give the nose better shape and support.
Many of our patients choose rhinoplasty because they are dissatisfied with the shapes or sizes of their noses. Bumps, wide nostrils, or bulbous tips are some of the common reasons for which patients choose to undergo rhinoplasty. A good candidate will be an adult or young adult (at least in the mid-teens) who is in overall good health and has realistic expectations about the outcome of his or her surgery.
