Performed by John L. LeRoy, M.D., FACS in Atlanta, Georgia

Many people desire to rejuvenate their appearances without the use of facial plastic surgery. Alternatively, if they have already undergone a facelift, neck lift, or eyelid surgery, they may wish to maintain their new appearances without further surgical intervention. For these patients, injectable facial fillers are an excellent way to give the face a youthful, healthy glow. At the office of Dr. John LeRoy in Atlanta, we offer facial rejuvenation treatments like Restylane®, JUVÉDERM®, and other dermal fillers.

Non-Surgical Injectables Overview

Dr. LeRoy offers non-surgical injectables which can be used alone or following a surgical facelift to smooth facial wrinkles.

Restylane® is a clear gel made from hyaluronic acid, a substance that occurs naturally in the body. Originally developed in Sweden and available at our office in Atlanta, Restylane® is an FDA-approved injectable facial rejuvenation treatment used worldwide to smooth out facial wrinkles.

When a small amount of Restylane® is injected into the skin, it attaches to the water molecules that are already present in the body. As a result, the tissue underneath the skin begins to plump, effectively filling in the wrinkles in the skin’s outer layers. Unlike some other dermal fillers, Restylane® is not derived from animal products, so there is very little chance of the body rejecting Restylane® or experiencing an allergic reaction. Although Restylane® has an excellent safety record, Dr. John LeRoy will be sure to evaluate your medical history to avoid any adverse side effects.

Restylane® Lyft

As the newest member of the Restylane® family, Restylane® Lyft is FDA-approved to not only smooth wrinkles around the mouth, but also to add youthful volume to the cheeks. As our faces lose volume with age, the cheeks can begin to look more thin and gaunt, and Restylane® Lyft can produce a natural-looking, younger appearance.

Radiesse® is a cosmetic filler that aids in facial rejuvenation, especially around the nose and mouth. Radiesse® is a gel-like solution that contains a substance called calcium hydroxylapatite, which is already found naturally in the body. After three months, Radiesse® begins to stimulate new collagen growth, making the skin appear plumper and reducing the prominence of fine lines and wrinkles for up to two years.

JUVÉDERM® is an injectable dermal filler that can be very effective at smoothing out deep wrinkles and creases, as well as adding volume to facial features such as the lips and cheeks. JUVÉDERM® is composed of hyaluronic acid, a substance that occurs naturally in the body, and typically does not require an allergy test.

Juvéderm Voluma™ XC

While the majority of facial fillers focus on areas like the nose and mouth, Juvéderm Voluma™ XC specifically concentrates on shaping all three areas of the cheeks. The filler is comprised of hyaluronic acid and lidocaine, a local anesthetic which works to maximize patient comfort, creating a more relaxed experience. Juvéderm Voluma™ XC is the first FDA-approved filler to temporarily correct volume loss in the cheeks for results lasting up to two years.

The Facial Filler Procedure

When performed by a highly experienced and qualified medical professional like Dr. LeRoy, facial filler injections involve a very simple procedure. The particular product you will use depends on your aesthetic goals and medical needs, which Dr. LeRoy will discuss with you during your consultation. After determining the injection sites, Dr. LeRoy will use a fine needle to inject the necessary filler into the treatment areas. These areas can be numbed if desired to provide you with the most comfortable treatment possible. Depending on the number of areas the patient would like to treat, the entire procedure typically takes less than 30 minutes, and you can see the results almost immediately. There is no downtime associated with facial filler injections, so patients can return to their daily activity after their appointment. In fact, many patients schedule their injections to take place during their lunch hour. Swelling and bruising are unlikely, but when these symptoms do occur, they are temporary and typically subside within a few days.

Frequently Asked Questions about Facial Fillers

How do I know how long my dermal filler results will last?
Every patient’s results vary, but each type of filler has its own timeframe of how long the results should last. Restylane® and JUVÉDERM® both tend to last between six and nine months. JUVÉDERM Voluma™ XC and Radiesse®, however, produce results that can last up to two years.

What is the difference between facial fillers and BOTOX® and Dysport®?
There are two major factors that contribute to facial wrinkles: the loss of collagen in our skin as we age, and overly tense or overused facial muscles, which naturally occur after years of facial expressions. Facial fillers address the loss of collagen and volume in the skin, while BOTOX® and Dysport® relax the underlying creased facial muscles.

Are dermal fillers safe?
All of the dermal fillers offered by Dr. John LeRoy are FDA-approved for safe and effective wrinkle reduction. However, the procedure is only safe and effective when performed by a qualified professional like a board-certified plastic surgeon. The injections need to be administered with precise placement and depth to ensure ideal results and minimize risks of side effects, and receiving treatment from under-qualified individuals (especially when the patient doesn’t know exactly what the injected substance is) can result in a number of complications.
